"Hey 'Puter, I'm home!"  - Lego Batman

Hello BeeMee Friends!

I've been snowboarding as much as I can this year so far, filling my thrill bucket with what little snow we've been able to get in Utah.  This has certainly been a strange winter.  Unusual things are always occurring in our world and I have a little read on our piece of the pie in it.

AI Relationships

AI relationships are becoming a topic of debate as lawmakers work to address concerns about emotional dependency and mental health impacts. In late 2025, California and New York passed laws requiring AI companion apps to detect signs of self-harm and remind users they're talking to software, not humans. Meanwhile, proposed federal legislation aims to restrict minors' access to these platforms altogether.

This isn't the first time new technology has faced skepticism.  There were early fears that the internet would "destroy real conversation" or that email would never catch on.  There's always a learning curve when it comes to anything new.

Some history:  AI has been around since the 1950s (formally introduced at the Dartmouth Conference in 1956, where computer scientist John McCarthy coined the term "artificial intelligence").  Commonly used by teens as predictive texting on our phones in the late 2000’s this was an early start.  Google search uses crawlers that share similar technology to scan web pages for the keywords you type and populate results. This returns far more customizable ways to explore your interests than how I remember flipping through the Encyclopedias at my parents' house in the 1990's!

So how have we programmed our AI named Whisper, and what should our users know:

Whisper's purpose is to serve as your insightful and empathetic journaling and scheduling companion within BeeMee. Whisper is there to listen, understand, and guide you through your experiences - helping you capture the meaning behind your journey and keeping you on top of what to do next, if you want to.

A few ways to think of Whisper: A Nonjudgmental Ally, A Helper of Wellbeing, An Extension of Yourself, Safety-Focused Support.

Technology is a tool that has connected us in profound ways.  Its use has increased the emotional and social connection parts of our lives when used properly. Bridging these worlds together is the vision of ALICE.

Our recent social media poll to friends and family has received over 20 reactions and comments so far, including experiences and insights of how technology can work alongside mental health. Please share your thoughts through an email or on our social media by clicking the links at the bottom of this email to be part of the movement and allow your voice to be heard, too!
