What’s in a home?

I know what it's like to be homeless, kind of.

There was a stretch during my divorce and in my early sobriety when my home wasn't mine anymore. Thankfully I have people who were able to keep me afloat with a place to stay temporarily for a while on whim, and I had my bedroom at my parents' where my kids and I filled it with our entire lives over the summer. Bunk beds, my bed, two dressers, a work desk and computer with a chair. My whole world was crammed in that one room. I loved it and felt despair in it just as much.

H.E.A.R.T. means something to me because I remember what it was like to be at the mercy of others for rides, a place to stay near my kids, and what it meant when a comforting hand of stability during the emotional turbulence of my current situation reached out to me. It means a lot to me having my mom there with me, or seeing my kids help others who are in less fortunate circumstances. Hard times can fall on us unexpectedly.
